Irrational fear of the number 4
is widespread in many Asian countries. 

많은 아시아 나라에는 숫자 4의
미신의 공포가 널리 퍼져있어요.

 

It even has a name: tetraphobia. 

심지어 테트라공포증이라는 이름까지 있어요.

 

The roots of this suspicion go back to China
where the words “death” and “four”
sound almost the same.

이 의혹의 근원은
4와 죽음의 발음이 거의 비슷한
중국으로 거슬러 올라갑니다.

 

The situation is similar in Korea and Japan. 
한국과 일본도 비슷한 상황입니다.

 

That’s why there are no floors
in hospitals and public buildings
that end with the number 4.

북한의 통치자인 김정은은

 Instead, the country celebrates the birthday
of his late grandmother, Kim Jong Suk.

대신 그의 할머니 김정숙의 생일을 축하해요.

 

She was the wife of the country’s first leader,
Kim II Sung (who was also known as
“The eternal president of the republic”),
a communist, and the “Sacred Mother of the Revolution.”

그녀는 북한의 최초지도자인
(영원한 공화국의 대통령으로 알려진)
김일성의 부인이며 혁명의 신성한 어머니입니다.

베트남 사람들은 고양이를 싫어해요

Local people are scared of cats,
and that’s why one can hardly see a cat
in a Vietnamese house.

현지인들은 고양이를 무서워하기 때문에
베트남 집에서는 고양이를 거의 볼 수 없어요.

 

Moreover, they are not on the streets either.

게다가 고양이들은 길거리에도 없어요.

 

 Again, it’s all because of superstitions.

이건 전부 미신 때문인데요.

 

The meowing of cats sounds like
the Vietnamese word for poverty.

고양이의 야옹소리는 베트남 말로
빈곤과 비슷하게 들린답니다.

 

Therefore, so as not to attract poverty,
they simply prefer to stay away from cats.

그래서 가난해지지 않기 위해서 단순하게
고양이를 멀리하는 편이 낫답니다.

일본 부부는 따로 잡니다.

 

After having a baby,
the role of a Japanese woman
in the family changes completely.

she starts using a child’s bed,
which is often placed in another room.

but Japanese mothers sleep with their children
until the age of 10-13.
